Razer, a leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, has partnered with ClearBot, a marine waste cleaning startup, to advance the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics and reduce ocean pollution. This partnership was announced on World Ocean day this year. It is a part of Razer’s 10-year #GoGreenWithRazer campaign, which includes the company making green investments to support the environment.

Data reveals that at least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and it makes 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. The plastic breaks into smaller pieces due to wave action and sun exposure. It also enters the food chain and additionally releases chemicals that further contaminate the sea.

Ocean cleaning companies face difficulties using outdated technology, cost, and efficiency. ClearBot is a startup working towards marine waste cleaning. They design robots that leverage AI-powered computer vision to identify marine plastic waste and collect information about these pollutants to protect aquatic life.  These robots are deployed to retrieve marine waste, which is later disposed of.

Patricia Liu, the chief of staff at Razer, said that “We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to work with a startup focused on saving the environment. ClearBot’s unique AI and advanced machine learning technology will enable and empower governments and organizations around the world to broaden their sustainability efforts. We urge other innovative startups to reach out to Razer for collaboration opportunities as we strive to make the world a safer place for future generations.”

Engineers and Designers working at Razer’s have volunteered their personal time and technical expertise to help and make their prototype in a scalable and mass-marketable product. Using Razer’s extensive knowledge and technical know-how, ClearBot made an extremely efficient robot design. This fully automated robot is equipped with AI and ML capabilities that can detect plastics within the proximity of 2 meters in rough waters. This robot can collect up to 250 kgs of plastic in a single cycle. It also runs on solar energy.

Sidhant Gupta, the CEO of ClearBot said that “The Razer team’s action-oriented approach to solving marine waste issues was extremely eye-opening. We are grateful to the team who volunteered their time for this project.  With the new model, we’re confident in extending our reach globally to protect marine waters, starting with partners, which include marine harbor operators in Asia and NGOs who have already expressed interest. Together with Razer, we look forward to effecting positive change for the world.”
