  • Ethical Dilemma While Using Artificial Intelligence

Posted by Aiwozo on July 13, 2021 at 5:31 pm

The ethical dilemma is a constant in human life whenever it comes to making decisions. We are always concerned whether we need ‘To-do or not to do” or “To be or not to be.”

In this technological era, AI has come the closest to human-like attributes. It can imitate human intelligence when operating or making a decision. Although AI cannot decide independently, the programmer’s mentality reflects upon AI-driven machines. The rising use of AI has increased the instances of ethical dilemmas.

For instance, if an accident happens while driving a car, the car intelligence system would not have to decide whether a child should be saved first or an adult. Ethical challenges faced by AI-driven machines include non-transparency, biased decisions, surveillance practices to gather data, and the privacy of court users.

A machine only faces technical breakdowns and does not face emotional setbacks. The advantage of this can be seen in different sectors like customer service.

Many apps are making their algorithms using the idea to nurture addictive behavior. For example, applications like tinder are designed to keep the users on an AI-driven platform and find matches based on the time invested in a session.

    Training Biases

A generally known and discussed AI ethical issue is training bias in systems that include predictive analysis.

Previously Amazon ran into a hiring bias issue after training an AI-driven algorithm when it presented strong candidates based on historical data. Previously the candidates were chosen by humans and did involve some human bias. The algorithm showed gender bias in the recruitment process.

The New York City Police Department revealed that it had developed a Patternizer. It is an algorithmic ML software that goes through the police data to find patterns and connect crimes. This software is not used for rape or homicide cases and does not include factors like gender or race. Even though this software removed racial bias, removing bias from a historical set of data is not standard practice.

    Making of Fake News

With the use of AI, Deep Fakes have become quite common. In this method, AI is used to superimpose images, videos, audio on others, creating a false impression of original media and audio mostly with malicious intent. They use face swaps, voice imitation, etc.

This technology is becoming increasingly available even to people without technical skills, unlike the older video and photo editing methods.

This technology was used in the last US presidential elections when Russia implemented Reality hacking. A similar practice was used in the Brexit campaign and is being used as an example of the rising political tensions and confusing global perspectives.

    Privacy Concerns of the Customers

Most devices such as mobile phones use AI to gather data and provide a more personalized experience.

If done transparently, this feature serves perfectly. However, when used without consent, it breaches one’s privacy.

The instances mentioned above explain to us how artificial intelligence raises the question of ethical dilemmas.
